Hello UB Journalists,

It is our second to last week together and we still have a good deal of work to do. So let's get to it. Your next assignment is to write another blog article. This time you will select from the list of themes below.
As always, your task is to research a primary source to build your story around. As this will be your 3rd article, grading for this assignment will be ratcheted-up. This means you will be graded tougher than on past blog articles.
There is also an added piece to this blog article. You will need to publicize your article through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Mashable, Reddit, etc.). You will be graded according to the criteria below.
This one is worth 200 points!

Themes
  • Culture building through mass media
  • Journalism on the fringe (indi/alternative-journalists)
  • Consumerism in the news
  • Mass media and college culture among minorities
  • Corporate media vs. democratization of journalism
Grading Criteria
  • Appropriate title - 10 pts
  • Links, photos, video - 25 pts
  • Complete narrative (contains all parts of narrative/storytelling structure) - 35 pts
  • Use of evidence (Quotes, Data, etc) - 25 pts
  • Grammar/readability - 20 pts
  • Three sources (min) - 35 pts
  • Use of multiple media outlets - 20 pts
  • Publicizing/traffic - 30 pts

Great Talk Today

Following the discussion we had today, I feel particularly proud to be part of your Upward Bound experience. As we discussed, you are all part of something very special. You are all someone else's hope: hope for change, hope for progress, hope for the future. Here's an article that I found interesting and related to our discussion today. Extra credit opportunity for the first ten (same as last time). http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/04/traditional-college-debate-white-privilege/360746/

The World Cup is Here!

I am not one of those crazy sports fanatics. Some years I don't care about the NBA (like this year). Most years I don't watch the superbowl. Hockey who? Okay, well this year I did watch the NHL playoffs (hey, that's tough to admit for a Mexican). Anyway, my point here is that my love of the World Cup is not some sports addiction. The World Cup simply kicks butt!

Sorry. I get a little worked up.

Well since I've been teaching this journalism / critcal media literacy class I am all over Twitter, Facebook, etc. Guess what I ran across on Mashable? Well, actually you don't have to guess. Follow this link and find out.

Hint: It has something to do with the World Cup. AND social media.
